Waist Beads and Body Image in Your 40s: What Nobody Tells You
Baby, nobody prepares you for how much your relationship with your own body shifts in your 40s. Not just how it looks, how you FEEL about it. And I don't mean that in a scary way, I mean it in a real way, because I lived it and I'm still living it.
Your body starts doing things it didn't used to do. Carrying weight differently. Moving differently. And if you're not careful, the whole story you tell yourself about your body turns into a list of complaints. I know because I've caught myself doing it too.
This is the part nobody really talks about when they talk about waist beads. Everybody wants to tell you the history, the meaning, the stones. Nobody tells you what it actually feels like to put something beautiful on a body you've spent years being at war with.
The Body You Have Right Now
Here's what I want you to sit with for a second. The body you have RIGHT NOW, today, whatever season it's in, whatever it's carrying, whatever it looks like compared to ten years ago, that's the only body you get to actually live in. Not the one from your wedding day. Not the one you're hoping for after some new routine. This one. Today.
Waist beads aren't a reward you earn once your body looks a certain way. They're not a measuring tool, and baby, if that's how somebody's selling them to you, I'd gently push back on that. I don't make these so you can track a number. I make them so you can adorn the body you're actually living in, right now, exactly as it is.
Why This Hits Different After 40
In your 20s, body image stuff is loud but it's usually about fitting in. In your 40s it gets quieter and somehow heavier. Your body's changing whether you asked it to or not, and a lot of us were never taught how to be gentle with ourselves through that. We were taught to fix it, hide it, apologize for it.
I'm done apologizing for mine. And I want that for you too.
What Changed for Me
I started wearing waist beads during one of the hardest seasons of my life, when I was rebuilding everything after leaving a relationship that took a lot from me, including how I felt about my own body. Putting something beautiful directly on my skin, something I chose, something that meant something, was one of the first ways I started coming back to myself.
It wasn't about how my body looked in that moment. It was about deciding my body was worth adorning anyway. Worth celebrating anyway. Not later, not after some transformation. Right then, in the middle of the mess.
Adornment, Not Achievement
That's the whole difference, baby. Adornment says this body deserves something beautiful because it's mine and I'm in it. Achievement says this body deserves something beautiful once it earns it.
I only make one of those.
Every set I build is meant to sit on you exactly as you are today. Not a smaller version of you, not a future version of you, you. The stones don't care what size you are. The intention behind them doesn't either. That's kind of the whole point.
If You've Been Waiting to Feel "Ready"
If part of you has been waiting to feel a certain way about your body before you let yourself have something like this, I want to gently tell you, you don't have to wait. You're allowed to adorn yourself in the middle of not loving every part of your body yet. Sometimes the adorning is actually part of how you get there.
Your body carried you through your 20s and 30s and it's carrying you through this decade too. It deserves something beautiful on it now, not just eventually. 💜
