The Difference Between Wellness Trends and Actual Rituals (And Why It Matters After 40)

Okay baby, can we talk about how there's a NEW thing every single month. 😅 A supplement everybody's suddenly taking. Some new skincare step nobody had even heard of six months ago. A whole eleven step morning routine filmed in that soft pretty lighting, promising your life is gonna change if you'd just commit.

By 40, I've tried a dozen of these. And I've quietly dropped a dozen of these too.

And here's the thing. That's not you failing at self care. That's you finally learning the difference between a trend and a ritual, and baby, that difference matters more than almost anything else in how you take care of yourself in this decade.

What Makes Something Just a Trend

A trend is borrowed. It comes from somewhere outside you, an influencer, an article, your cousin who swears it changed her life. It promises a result, and it usually promises it FAST. It's exciting for a minute, and then it's not, and then one day you realize you haven't done it in three weeks and you don't even miss it.

Nothing wrong with trying trends, I've tried plenty. Some of them actually help! But they're built to get replaced, and honestly you can feel that the whole time you're doing it. Part of you is just waiting to see if it "works," which means part of you is already halfway out the door.

What Makes Something an Actual Ritual

A ritual is yours. It doesn't have to work fast because working fast was never really the point of it. It marks something, a transition, an intention, a moment where you come back to yourself on purpose. You could stop tomorrow and nothing would fall apart, and you keep doing it anyway because the doing IS the thing.

Your coffee in silence before anybody else wakes up. That one song on the drive home. Putting something on your body every day that reminds you what you're working toward, whether or not one single person ever notices it.

Rituals don't need an audience, baby. Trends usually do.

Why This Hits Different After 40

Something shifts in your 40s and I hear it from so many women, myself included. Less patience for stuff that doesn't actually serve you. Less interest in performing wellness for anybody watching. Everything I've read says the same thing over and over, self care after 40 tends to get simpler, not more complicated. Less chasing. Keeping what actually works and letting the rest go.

That's not you settling. That's you finally having clarity. You've tried enough trends by now to know exactly what a real one feels like versus what a ritual feels like, and you'd rather have three things that are truly yours than fifteen things you saw somebody else doing on your phone at 11pm.

How to Actually Tell the Difference

Ask yourself this. Would I still do this if not one single person ever knew I was doing it, and it never "worked" in any way I could measure?

If the honest answer is yes, baby, you found a ritual. If it's no, that's okay too, that just means you found a trend, and trends are ALLOWED to come and go without it meaning something's wrong with your discipline.

This Is Kind of the Whole Point of What I Make

This is really the entire idea behind an intentional waist bead set. I'm not selling you a fix. I'm not promising you're gonna be transformed by next Tuesday. It's something you put on and wear, quietly, as a physical reminder of whatever you're working toward, for as long as it means something to you and not one day longer.

That's the difference. Not better, not worse than a trend. Just built to stay with you instead of built to get replaced. 💜
